2010/2011 Peco League and junior section

Report by Bob Jackson (March 2011)

The Peco cross country league is a series of races taking place between November and March each year.  The league is centred on Leeds but clubs from outside Leeds may compete by invitation.

In the 2010/11 series, 17 clubs competed, of whom 9 (Abbey, Airecentre, Horsforth, Hyde Park, Kippax, Kirkstall, Rothwell, St Theresa’s and Wetherby) are active members of the Leeds Athletics Network.  The geography extends from Ilkley in the north west to Ackworth in the south east.  The league is managed by members of Abbey Runners, but clubs host the individual events and in 2010/11, the hosts were Ackworth, Rothwell, Kirkstall/Horsforth, St Theresa’s and Valley/Airecentre.

Numbers have been steadily increasing each year, and in each of the last 3 races this season there were over 300 finishers in the senior race.

Each event also included a junior race of 1 mile for under-11’s and a race of 2 miles for under-17’s. Exactly 100 athletes ran at least 1 race and these numbers were boosted by the Bradford Athletics Network recommending these races for their junior runners, a number coming from each of Bradford Airedale, Bingley and Ilkley.

Safety was improved with stakes provided by the Leeds Athletics Network.
