Leeds Wheelchair racing training and mentoring clinic

Report by Lisa Moseley (November 2010)

The Leeds Wheelchair racing training and mentoring clinics started with a bang on Saturday 6th November 2010, at John Charles Centre for Sport. Welcoming beginners through to experienced wheelchair racers, the session catered for people wanting to come and try the sport and provided a training session for athletes now well into their winter training schedules. This brought lots of interest and a massive turn out, making the day busy but exciting!

The 3 hour session was run by UK Athletics affiliated coaches and organised by the Leeds Athletics network and Leeds City Council who supported the sessions and helped to provide the necessary equipment that was needed. The athletes were given the opportunity to train on both the outdoor and indoor track and on the specialised wheelchair rollers, given tips and guidance and led through a typical training session on each, allowing the athletes to try out every distance from sprints to long distance.

This was the first of six sessions that are being held over winter months to provide more experience for those wishing to compete in the 2011 disability athletics season. It also helps to uncover new talent for the 2012 and 2016 Paralympic games and discovers the new generation of Leeds athletics champions!
